“Cruelty today is institutionalized and industrialized. And yes, we live in more cruel times because 20 or 50 years ago there were institutions that held together the morality of humanity. There were shared values; but more importantly, there were political and institutional movements that defended values such as human dignity and equality. Those movements were strong enough. The problem is that today cruelty has no limits because the political movements that contained it are weakened. A good example is the plan presented by Jared Kushner to turn Gaza into a tourist resort with large hotels. Do you think that, for example, in the late 70s or 80s, it would have been possible to say something like that in a public space? It would have been impossible, not only because it is a shitty idea, but because there were political movements that would have shamed to death a person capable of proposing something like that. I am sure that back then there were people who already thought like Kushner. But they were alone, they did not dare to speak out loud and they did not have well-funded machinery.”
