PALOMA Project

The PALOMA Project (Parallel Logic Machine) was a revolutionary proposal to multiply the processing capacity of conventional computers at a fraction of their cost. The idea, radically different from the approaches of its time, consisted of arranging simple processors in a matrix that communicated with their four immediate neighbors, forming scalable networks of thousands or even millions of units. By multiplying the cost of a computer by three, a power fifty times greater was obtained. The PALOMA 64K team achieved 128 gigaflops with a matrix of 65,535 processors, what we would today call a supercomputer, but conceived to be accessible and manufacturable at low cost.
